Curt,

The process is not as hard as you might think. The TS-830S, TS-530S, and TS-530SP have a little trick to the design. Actually, two of them that apply to this situation. First of all, removing the universal coupling does not require a complete disassembly of the PA Enclosure. Note that there is a large opening where the bandswitch shaft enters the PA Enclosure area. Loosen the set screws on the universal joint where it connects to the bandswitch wafer(s) inside the enclosure and you then merely pull the shaft toward the front of the radio, replace the univeral joint, and then reverse the process. This is a bit of an oversimplification but you will see what I mean when you open the radio.

Also, I found on my TS-530SP and my TS-830S that the universal joint on the Load control and the Bandswitch are the same. But, the torque requirement for the Load control is very low so a damaged univeral joint works very well there and likely would last for many years. Try it.

Be sure when you take apart the Bandswitch that you do not incorrectly replace the shaft into the wafers inside the PA Enclosure. It is easy to get confused and end up with the lower level circuits set to a different band than the PA -- not a good thing.

Hope this helps. By the way, the universal joints are available from Pacific Coast Parts <www.pacparts.com> and from East Coast Transistor <www.kenwoodparts.com>.
