[Kenwood] My TS440 Must Warm Up!

Mike,
This is a common problem that most of the TS-440s have. After they get
older, sealer that was placed in the inductors in the VCO unit becomes
inductive. This causes the radio not to oscillate. Eventually when you
turn the radio on you will see only dots on the display and it will take a
day or so for the radio to dry out enough to become operational. The good
news is that Kenwood covers half the cost of the repair through a Kenwood
Authorized Service Center. The last time I checked the price was $150.00
for repair. My TS-440 is still in my shack waiting to be sent off to be
repaired. I hope this helps. You can find more information about is at

I'm trying to help a friend get back on the air with a newly acquired, but
previously little used 440.
From a room temperature start, the radio must sit powered up for about
fifteen minutes before it will receive any signals. During the warm up, you
get a display, and receiver hash, but no signal.
I'm hoping that the problem is simply a loose connector or mounting screw on
some board.
Anyone have thoughts about where to begin checking?
