good question. I have a ts930 with the piexx board installed and
operational.
why did I do this? well, the 930 is well known to have problems with the
main cpu/display board. bad solder joints at the plated through holes as I
understand it. mine had these problems and they were fixed off and on for a
long time. and put up with. I was inactive for a while and resurfaced as
N1NK. the 930 worked when I fired it up but the display was out. the
question was - replace it or fix it? a bit research pointed me to the piexx
board. the board both fixes the original problems and adds new
capabilities. some amout of computer interface does come in useful for
dxing. particularly when coupled with the logging programs. and the cost
was reasonable.
so the bottom line was that the piexx board was a whole lot cheaper than a
brand new or used current model computer controllable rig. as I said, it
fixed the problems I had as well as added new capabilities.
that said, I did eventually acquire a ts2000 to add the vhf and satellite
capabilities. decided to go this route rather than add vhf multimode
transceivers. the 930 is sitting in the standby position ready and willing
to spring into action if needed.
nothing against the 930 operating capabilities. mine has been through a lot
of contesting and never cried 'uncle'.
I have no relationship with piexx except as a satisfied customer...
