[Kenwood] Question abt 440S Tuner

Hello all, I think my tuner may be having a problem but I wanted to pick a
few minds.
Sometimes when I push the At Tune the tuner will kick in sometimes it won't,
I keep the Auto/Thru switch in Auto and yesterday I was on 17 and my SWR was
around 2, and this morning I get on and swr is ok.

Will the tuner try to tune the antenna every time you push the button or
just whenever it feels the swr is too high?

Can someone shed some light on my possible problem or am I doing something
wrong.
