[Kenwood] TS-140S- Audio problem

I'm Isaac 4Z4TL and am posting this message on behalf of my friend Shay, 4X6ZQ.

He has a problem with audio on the TS140S as follows:
Turning the volume knob to half way is ok and volume increases to some mid point , maintaining good quality. 
However, further  rotation of the knob results in almost no volume intensity  change and the quality of sound 
becomes poor and distorted.
It sounds  as if the audio   is being chopped and \ or  choked .
Any ideas ? where to look?

We are  no technicians, so the more specific you are -the better ....:)
