For those of you who were around K6NCG in 1962, when Don Hickle (K?RUC)
first got the RTTY position going, you may remember "NERK NERK", which
became his "sort of" nickname. If you look at the picture of him in "The
60's" - Fifth Row, 2nd. from Left... you'll see "NURK NURK" [sic] on top of
the Model 19.

NERK NERK means To Any and All US Navy ships - typically we copied the Fox
from NPG (NAVCOMMSTA SFRAN - actually Stockton, CA)

A little later, during the time I was there from July '62 until May '63,
there was another member of K6NCG. His first name was Jim, but I can't
remember his call. He started with a cardboard box full of new spare parts
for a Model 33 TTY and built an entire unit, piece by piece. The cardboard
box was about 3' x 3' x 4 1/2' tall and had hundreds of parts, each
individually wrapped in plastic bags. I believe he had never seen one of
the mod 33's, but had the manual and just sat in the back room, reading the
manual and putting the thing together. It took him months, but he finished
it before I left.

A classic example of the HIGH CALIBER of folks who belonged to the club and
went to ET-A school. Overall, the most astoundingly amazing group of folks
I ever served with.
