Hi Tom,
Sorry to be late getting back to you about lodging.
If I were coming to town, having lived here for the last 20 years, I would
not stay in San Francisco for a variety of reasons. Hotel rates, traffic
congestion, and cost of parking being the main reasons. I think you would
be better off staying in the East Bay area somewhere, though the congestion
is just as bad, but I think the rates would be a little better. The down
side is that it costs $4 to cross the bridge to TI, but the return trip is
free. If you stay in the City and only go to TI and back to the City there
is no toll.
I just ran through my favorite Internet travel site (www.kayak.com) and
centered the search on Emeryville and got a bunch of possibilities for
hotels ranging from $49-217 a nite. Rental cars are averaging about
$30/day. Lots to choose from!

I would not stay in Richmond or Oakland citycenter, though the area around
the Oakland airport is pretty good.

The Oakland airport is often overlooked as a place to fly in and out of.
There may be fewer options there but it is definitely less crowded and often
the flights are a little cheaper than SFO. San Jose is also worth checking
out for getting in and out of the bay area.

feel free to give me a call if I can help you with deciding what areas are
good to stay and where to stay away from.

You're the keeper of the fire, buddy. Nice to know the recent history of
the place. I wonder if you or a friend has a digi-cam, and would be willing
to take a few shots of the places we recall? I especially wonder if the
"World Fountain" is still in place, as it was often a navigational-marker
for me, when the really heavy fog would be in, and I was trying to find my
way back to the barracks. - not kidding!

Also, are any of the old wooden barracks or the former chow-hall remaining?
How about any of the former classroom buildings? (that's the first place I
saw one of the INfamous clocks, running backwards (the field-coil of the
clock is inverted over the enclosed-sealed "works", and the clock runs
backwards) I recall ET1 Thibadoux (Tibb-a-dough) NOT finding that funny, as
we sat there attempting to absorb multivibrator theory.

It's always amazed me (personally), why I didn't stop by the shack, when I
passed through again in '67, on my way to Guam Island (and further)? Lots
of things going through my head at the time, I guess (or maybe NOTHING)...
then again in '69 - who knows?

Any ideas on LESS EXPENSIVE accomodations for those of us who would be
flying in? I know that SFRAN is not the cheapest place to stay... my cry
that "I'm a Native - can't you help me?"... just don't seem to work.

Tom - WØEAJ
