Ahhhh, but the OLD tower was over at "bayside".  As my 60's pictures on the website show, the new tower... replete with huge springs, arrived shortly before my departure from the island, thus I never got to see it up.  Hey, what did they get for the springs?  Musta' traded 'em to SOMEBODY!

Upon traveling to SFRAN in '82, I drove down to the main-gate and asked a fellow chief (although I'd been out of the Nav' for some time) if it might be possible to drive over to the old site, and he said I couldn't get on-base.  He even called the OOD to ask if I might ride along in the SP pickup, but no joy.  I had to be content with just smelling it again*...

*You know - that heady eau d' mar of salt water, decaying pilings and wood, diesel fuel, and Navy haze grey paint, with just a twinge of floor-wax and scouring powder.  If they'd bottle the stuff, I'd have some in the shack.  Another fragrance might be "Radio One", which would be a blending of:  Navy electronic equipment, teletype tape, Model 28 lube grease, and some of the above ingredients, as well.

Got a flaming-liberal sister-in-law who lives in SFRAN, so guess I have an excuse to visit...
