Hi Desmond
I attended ET school back in 1953. In fact I designed the hand drawn K6NCG
QSL you see on the website. I was active in the Ham club back then. When I was
there they had a real nice setup. A military BC610 xmtr which could run 500W
and a super pro rx. Also, we had a beam and tower. There were quite a few hams
attending ET school back then and the club was very active. We worked a lot of
DX. I graduated from there almost a year later and was assigned to the USS
Winston AKA94. I spent the rest of my Navy time aboard that ship. We had 5 ETs
aboard so we were well staffed and I wound up handling all the electronics
inventory ie: spare parts etc. the xmtrs and receivers rarely broke down but
most of the time keeping the Radars going was the main job.
I was fortunate that I also had the opportunity to attend RM school in San
Diego and was a shipboard radio operator aboard the USS Bayfield APA33 before
attending TI. Sorry, I cant help you about whats left at T.I. Any longer. I
heard they were going to make an amusement park on that big flat area. It
certainly would be a good use. I have no pix of my time at the school
unfortunately. I didnt own a camera at that time.
I am just passing along the few tidbits I have. I had a lot of fun at ET
school and spent a lot of my free time at the club station.
I am now retired but have become a Ham Radio Cartoonist. I just published my
first Ham radio cartoon book called "Hi Hi-A Collection of Ham Radio
Cartoons." 112pg. Im quite proud of how it turned out. It is available from Lulu.com
on the internet for $10.95 plus shipping. I am still very active on all the
bands (except 80M)
You can see a pix of my ship, the Winston AKA 94 on my ham radio website
http://www.k9ya.org/w9cbt. I did take a number of pix of my time aboard ship
If I can answer any other questions about the old K6NCG setup in the 50's
contact me.
