Hi Pete -
Many thanks for the reply, sorry to say I was out of there on 16Oct63,
so we missed each
other by about a month ! Needless to say the guys in the club were all
finishing up their schooling
at different times so it's hard to say who was around or not when you
arrived. Do you remember
"Doc", Frank, or Gary? (their calls were in my posting)
By the time the Alaska earthquake happened I was in San Diego - in fact
I was body surfing
those 30-40 foot breakers that eventually came in to the beaches down
there ! Had a blast until the
life guards finally had everyone come in due to the possibility of
someone getting towed out to sea
or hurt by those powerful waves as they came crashing in.....
By 02June64 I was over in Japan @ NavComSta, Yokosuka, Japan. From
there I was about the
only active member of the club station KA2NY. Were only 2 other members
when I arrived, then the
PO1 got orders to Antartica.... the O3 never had time to enjoy the club
facilities due to too little time
from his job! So I pretty much had the place to myself, with double
bunks, coffee mess, + a lounge
area. The radio room had a 180 degree view of Tokyo Bay with a tri-bander
up about 60 ft. Think we
also had a 40 meter dipole, so 7,14,21, & 28 mc were the bands of choice.
Sorry we never had the pleasure of meeting you @ T.I. I sure do have
some wonderful memories
of my stay on the island.
Got to spend a couple of months in Vietnam on TDY orders from Japan,
setting up communications
trailers for the "Brass" to keep in touch with one another. (that was
enough time there for me !) Lasted
66 days in fact.
Can you remember ANY of the guys names (& calls too if you have them)
that were in the club
when you were there? Surely one or more were members when I was there.
Sure wish I had taken more
pictures & made more notes on the back of them too....!
Thanks for your email - more data if you have it,
please. BoB (W4JSB)
