If you haven't been monitorning the AMI frequency on 3870, or lived in New
York, you may not know who Gene Shepard was. His radio show on WOR, New
York was his own - he was a storyteller. He was a ham radio operator and
there exists a truly great narrative of his story of "Heising Modulation"
where he gets his first homebrew transmitter on the air. Here is a personal
tribute to Gene from a then high school student in 1954. Let your
imagination be your guide.

Good tidings and cheer to all!

Subject: [QRP-L] Time for my Gene Shepard story.

Have to go back 42 years and I am a senior at the Bronx High School of
Science in New York. My English class assignment was to try and interview
a local
personality. Of course my selection was Gene Shepard. After a few phone
calls to the station ( I think it was WOR) I hefted the classes Webcor
tape
recorder ( must have been 40lbs) on the bus in the north Bronx then to the
D
train subway for my appointment with Gene. Arriving at the station about
10PM I
was ushered into a hallway outside Gene's studio. Through the glass I saw
him
and he looked up and waved to me. I could hear the program in the hall via
some wall mounted speakers. After about 5 minutes he turned the
conversation on
air to me and as only Gene could do spent the next half hour talking about
this strange guy in the hallway... was I FBI?
what had he done wrong, was I the IRS? had he paid his taxes? Was I the
FCC?
The interview lasted over an hour ( I actually ran out of tape). It was
then
off to a local diner in lower manhattan for a treat on Gene. An experience
I
never forgot.

P.S. I called him Gene because that's what he wanted
