I have HRD and have very few problems. Don't dismay yet. 

First, like Pete said, close HRD  and then turn on the radio. Once the radio is on you start HRD and it will ask if you want to connect. As an aside, if you only have one radio you can set HRD to automatically connect on start up. The radio must be on first. 

There is a way to reconnect if HRD is started first.  As I recall, you go to File > Connect. I am not at home so I can't see the program to be sure. 

I recall seeing a section of the manual specifically for Icom radios. You may wish to read that. Obviously you aren't the first to have an issue with HRD and Icom. 

If that doesn't work, go to the forums on the HRD website. A great place to find answers. 

As you just bought it you can go to the support page and submit a ticket. 

Another potential problem is your virus software. Some of them think ham radios are evil and block connections. Search the forums for your antivirus to find solutions.
