Ok thanks for all the useful tips. I may build a CW receiver for say 20m and try and learn. Otherwise I think I'm going to try MP3 files.

Comma, period characters can come later.  I used to be able to take a group of folks from Zero to Five Words per Minute in eight hours.  If you play an instrument, or have a sense of music, you will find that you have a bit of an advantage in that you possess "tonal" quality.recognition.  It may be "Physico Babble" to some, but I have seen it work out for a lot of musical folks to their advantage.  Basics....  Get a rig that can copy CW on 80, 40, 20 meters CW.  Learn the Alpha and numerical characters in five character groups, copy those that you recognize by picking a spot on the wall and not looking at the paper when you write it down.  Practice increases speed over time.  No rush!!  A methods work.....  Copying live transmissions has the advantage learning to copy code thru noise, qrm and signal fade. It's all good.
