Kyle
not likely you can relate to a time when the internet, nor cell phones with texting, did not exist.

ham radio was once limited to real-time communication.  packet radio was a revolutionary change for us.  around 1980-something portions of 2m (and the UHF bands) were filled with packet radio -- nodes and bulletin boards.  now you could post a message for another ham, and send lots of broadcast traffic to all the connected hams.  it was really a noteworthy accomplishment, because nothing comparable existed in the civil sector.  we have dozens of hams in the area who built node-stacks -- devoting a PC, TNC and multiple rigs to this mission (in those years that clunky stuff may have costed 10X higher than now).

I can't speak well to current usefulness, but undoubtedly when the communications infrastructure goes down -- hams can still deploy something to move data, as well as real-time communication.  So hold this thought as you continue to explore.

 Hi all,
I found out recently that I can use my kenwood d72a on packet radio with RMS express. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing but I was able to connect and send a text message to WN3R-10. Can someone please explain a little more about what I can do with packet. It seems kinda pointless if your just posting a message to a station.
Thanks
Kyle
