Wow lots of challenges of HF mobile. And Joe's info that one brand seems to advice no mobile RF. Lower HF challenges include noise from the auto itself versus the small signal that is received from the rather small antenna, and the intended radiator's relation to the various pieces of the car -- wow! I have only played with 10m mobile at the peak of a former sunspot cycle - that was fun. Many enjoy HF mobile for state QSO parties and the like.
But I wonder if Don was merely asking about VHF/UHF FM mobile? Here I shared its just the persistence to work the 3 installation challenges that I mentioned (if there is a fourth I have not found it yet). Well perhaps the fourth is installing the rig so it can be safely operated -- I have done okay here. A good mobile rig works better than an HT, and vital not to need many controls when driving.
Don please clarify whether you are asking about HF or VHF?

I did a lot of grounding that seemed to have no effect until I grounded the engine block to the cab sheet metal. The manual for my Toyota says no mobile radios.

Let me know Don what you find out. I have not had much luck trying to
bond my own cars or RV for mobile. I can make 40m work ok but anything
lower 20m, 15m, and 10m seems to be a no go. Keeps picking up alternator
noise even though I have it on separate power supplies.
