I should have said TRANSCEIVER control for 100 Watts or whatever full power
is.
Digital modes require much less power and as WA3MEJ observes, NO ALC should 
be observed on the transceiver multimeter. Also, this make your life easier
as less to
do when going digital.  If you use XP or Vista, there is a program QuickMix
that 
allows you to set your sound card controls, save for that mode and recall
when 
needed.  Using MixW, FLDIGI here along with a MARS Military soundcard
Modem for Mill 188-110B find it very helpful.
