[K3PZN-List] Payload Flight, SMT, VE, HF

Stu -- nice report on your tracking!  Definitely a tracking feat down to 1000
feet many miles away!  I caught some of the activity on the repeater after
church -- maybe some other tracking reports will emerge via email.

I can imagine this thing landing near the gate, or in the middle of an exercise
and getting an interesting reaction -- of course APG is a very huge place - so
most likely it fell without fanfare.

------

Nice that we can do more than buying and selling on hamfest day! (of course the
balance is not tieing up too many of our manpower resources).   I saw the
well-equipped (well they were lacking cookie sheets to better retain the
components!) for SMT assembly.

Lot's of nice propagation is happening on 15 and 10m.  I have a little 2 element
beam (MA5B) that a friend provided up in the air.  I was skeptical that it would
make a difference over my vertical (that is a similar design), but often 2
elements is better than one.  I even worked a guy in Scotland using the same
antenna (and rig) as I was using!

I do have some interesting filter shape comparisons between my K2's analog
(varactor tuned xtal) and my other rig's DSP filters.  The DSP filters are more
square, but the analog filters also work.  This data is taken by tuning the
receiver to only noise on the input, routing audio to a soundcard, and using a
simple freeware program to sample and process the data.

As for where the balloon went, my best estimate on the landing site is just
on the North edge of Aberdeen Proving Grounds, possibly in the nearby
Chesapeake Bay. This is based on the last known triangulated position
(between Bel Air and Aberdeen) at 1447 and an average ground speed of about
23.4 mph. (Note: the last full frame of telemetry that I collected was at
1508:02 at which time the balloon telemetry indicated an altitude of about
1000 feet; signal was lost 40 seconds later.)

Regards,
Stu (W3STU).

I found this interesting article on youthful hams down in Frank's neck of
the
woods (an area I am familiar with do to family relations down there):

http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/264867  -- wow 3 high schools with
ham
clubs!  maybe more than have survived in the entire state of MD (my school
had a
club in Ohio but that was a few years ago, when the TR-4C was a new rig).

Also I heard a lot of traffic on the repeater associated with a later-than-I

expected balloon flight ... so I can imagine a report on the delay (??) and
I am
curious how many trackers participated (on the repeater anyway), and of
course
conjecture on where this thing went.
