Did you use a separate /boot partition at the beginning of the drive? Older
systems can only boot from a small portion of the beginning of a drive that
large, regardless of LBA and such settings, and if /boot is simply part of a
large root partition, it can easily wind up in an area of the drive that the
system is not capable of booting from. I'm not sure if that would result in
the drive being seen as completely unbootable or if GRUB would load
partially and then report an error, though.

As for the IDE error, I've never seen anything like that, but it wouldn't
suprise me if it's something specific to Ubuntu kernels (they've gained a
bit of notoriety for introducing kernel bugs, if I'm remembering correctly).
