I haven't studied it in detail, but this looks interesting. Note with a paddle plugged in, a keyer can also be a code practice oscillator also.
Even with rigs that have a built-in keyer - during a contest one may want to run with a PC interface AND an external keyer. (which is something I need to add assuming I don't buy a Win-Key).
On a related topic - a good paddle can cost a bunch! A decent paddle can be built from a kit - google 'black widow paddle W5JH' for example. (and for casual use even lower cost solutions are out there like the Arizona Scorpions paddle).

PS - last nite I turned on my original receiver (glowing technology from 1962 yes made before my time) and listened to a little SSB and CW ....
