OK I found the answer -- it requires a setting BEFORE the program is launched - so when I discovered the problem of the vanishing bandmap spots during FD it was already too late:

I recommend keeping bandmap spots for at least 2 hours during FD !  

Band Map Spot Timer [BandMap]

The length of time that a spot stays on the Band Map Window can be changed by the user in the WriteLog.ini file. Go to the [BandMap] section and modify the following line:

DefaultTimeoutSeconds=1200

The 1200 represents the number of seconds that the spot stays on the Band Map; in this case, twenty minutes.

Note: To have the timers for the Band Map and Packet windows expire at the same time, set the Packet Timer for the same length.
