Dear CCARC field day enthusiasts,
I saw WB8YYY's message and thought I'd take the time to give you a summary of our field day effort this year at the Gamber VFD.
We ran 5A this year and had what could be categorized as a relaxed, fun field day...where I have to admit the SSB camp was a bit more relaxed than the die-hard team of NY3A and friends who manned the 2 CW stations for all 24 hours!
There were about 15 of us including a few guests, one AB/621 tower, a unique dipole/vertical combination tower from W3ARS on 40m, and the NY3A super-duper dipole array for all bands on CW on several interesting poles. Mike, N3VOP put up a nice yagi for 6 meters.
Rob, K1RH stole the show by lending his motor home for the two SSB stations; his son Robert did a lot of operating, and we (of course) all loved the triplets Matt, Nick and Doug that were out a few times.
Somehow, most of the SSB operators (including your author) were missing in action after midnight!
The SSB team challenged the CW team to a "honor" bet that they would out score (in raw QSOs, not points) the CW team's total. In the end it was close, but the CW team had 2043 QSOs vs. the SSB team of 2008, including the VHF station. NY3A, K3WI and the CW team are victorious, and with far less antenna hardware on some of the bands in question.
So yes, as I'm sneaking off the property to go to sleep at 12:00 midnight, I run into a very energetic and enthusiastic Jim Cross and Steve Beckman, who have been traveling the entire day visiting sites!
Joe, N3YIM was crowned executive chef over the weekend, a role he will now fullfill every field day.
One thing everybody agreed on - is that we found just about the perfect field day formula this year - between setup...operating...and having a great time.
Our score was 12,188 + 970 bonus points = 13,158.
How did team CCARC do? I do remember talking to someone on 15 meters Sunday!
73,
Jim Nitzberg WX3B
