I brought home the GR-54 from the club scrapheap, and got it in the house before the XYL arrived. And I got brave and plugged it into a power strip. I had opened the cover with N3WM, and we were both impressed how nice things were -- I was afraid a bystander might exceed my $15 bid on the spot!
Anyway the relic works! Some noisy controls to clean ... but sounds on AM, clean SSB and CW. I was wondering about its selectivity, thinking it might need a IF filter upgrade to be any use ... but I gave it this test -- tune to 1110 WBT Charlote, then down to 1100 Cleveland -- and the latter came in nicely next door to WBAL. It also brought in what BC remains on those shortwave bands that work with zero sunspots ....
The relic covers ~ 200 - 400 kHz. Has anyone recently received longwave broadcasts from Europe ? I wonder if it is possible this winter with this radio ? It might require some powerline filtering (or wait until all the TVs in the neighborhood go to sleep, if they do ....).
Gee I hope Tony didn't have any fine print regarding if the radio actually works then .....
