John

Thanks for leading the activity again this year.

I will provide a K2 to Bill's CW station #2. It is 'back in one piece' after being upgraded to 100 watts. It consumes a little more power on receive in this configuration (maybe double?) so we need to assess how many mA-hours will be available at Bill's set-up. BILL N3WM - contact me to coordinate what we need (and if you are acting as treasurer you are looking for me anyway).

As for a third QRP CW station, if we deploy one, it should work well on 15m since K2's likely will want to be on 20 and 40 m during the daytime. I dont know how much we will gain here beyond the bonus points.

We do need to practically assess how many simultaneous HF antennas we will employ !

160m longer carolina windom, CW only (1)
80m shorter windom + 2 inverted V's (3)
40m same antennas above ?
20/15/10 triband beam for SSB (1)

20m PSK31 (N8PK) maybe a dipole is the way to go ? (1) -- as an alternative i have a 20m half square (someone gave it to me, it's commercially made, vertical elements are a quarter wave so it needs to be a little bit higher off the ground than that)

20m CW -- a 88 foot extended double zepp would be interesting if broadside can be towards the west, also could be used on 80/40/15m (1?)

10m ? this would be an interesting band for a second phone station if we get sporadic E. i need to evaluate if my HX-10 will operate QRP reliabily by turning down the drive.

if we are a bit resourceful, we might be able to constrain how many antennas we need by appropriate scheduling.

Food - can we use grills on the grounds ? i am willing to help but i am not the resourceful expert to pull it all together.

GIOTA - i will bring a nice 20m CW rig for this. we need to determine how we can effectively do logging with other transmitters sharing the same band. (i will defer to John to operate the PM and HW7, and if someone falls in love with the latter they should buy my HW8).

GOTA - we should assess if we have operators, and the points are to our advantage. do rules allow same rigs to be shared with other operations?

VHF CW - i would be willing to give (in particular) 6 and 2 meters a try. logging could be shared with the VHF station PC.

if coax is in short supply, let me know as i could loan two 100 feet sections of RG8.

if someone has SSTV savy, it would be an interesting demo mode (extra points here) that could be shown to any visitors, if we can arrangement someone to exchange pictures with, say on 2m or 440 ?

73, curt

Subject: [K3PZN-List] More Field Day Musings

All:

Last year, we ran as 11F. This year, if we have enough operators during the
push, we can do the same or, perhaps, get up to 13F. The reason that bumping
the number up is important is that we get 100 bonus points for each rig that
operates off of emergency power. Since we'll be all battery, that's 1100 to 1300
points for a 15 min effort.

As of now, we have two Station Captains for HF CW and one K2 committed. I'd
like a couple fo people to step up as Captains of a third HF CW rig and a VHF CW
(at least for the push); it would be great to have a second or third K2 or other
contest-quality QRP CW rig. I've had some tenative offers. How about some firm
ones?

I'd like to set up three CW rig in the club station area so that they can use
the on-site antennas. The digital rigs can set up wherever it's convenient.
VHF/UHF has dibs on the picnic table and area they used last year. I propose to
set up a dining fly or large tent on the lawn for HF Phone, GOTA, and a station
I call GIOTA. That stands for "Get It On The Air." This would be a place set
up with a multiband antenna and tuner where we could operate whatever rigs we
wanted on a causal basis. For example, when the main 40m CW station was down for
a break, I could put my Powermite on the air. All rigs would be welcome as long
as they were battery powered and QRP. Bring your Tuna Tin 2s, etc,. and have fun!

We still don't have a Food Captain.

We also need "Station Captain" for the H/T stations we will run during the push.

Here's the current slate of Station Captains and committed equipment:

Station/Captain/Radio/Power Source/Antenna

HF CW1/N3SB/Elecraft K2/ ??? /EOC Antennas

GIOTA/W3JJH/See List/Medium Battery Array/132 ft ladder-line fed inverted-vee

GIOTA Rigs so far:

Did I mention that we needed a Food Captain? Feel free to volunteer for that or
any other open position.
