The post is a fence post from Home Depot.  It may be galvanized, but it
is not painted.  (I will check for this.  I know what galvanized looks
like.)

My VOM is iffy.  I've only gotten it to work once out of many tries.
(One of the probes barely connects.)

I am assuming that you're suggestion is to test while not transmitting.

I have energized myself when I was a kid using a 4 watt CB transmitter.

While no real harm was done, it is decidedly unpleasant, and I don't
wish to try it again. :)  (Actually, it is very similar to sticking a
finger in a light socket.)
