I ran the Sunrise and Sunset applet at the Naval Observatory website for the
lat/long of the FD site. The times are:
Friday 0542 2022
Saturday 0542 2023
Sunday 0542 2023
Nautical twilight often marks the beginning and end of good grey line
propagation on 160 m. The times for nautical twilight are:
Friday 0428 2152
Saturday 0429 2152
Sunday 0429 2152
OK, I heard someone ask, "How dark is it at nautical twilight?" The practical
definition I was taught in the Army was this--at nautical twilight there's just
enough light to be able to see a man silhouetted against the horizon well enough
to shoot him at a range of 100 m.
In any case, it looks like the best time to try operating on 160 will be between
2015 and 2200 on Saturday and 0430 and 0545 on Sunday. Is anyone other than me
crazy enough to want to try operating QRP on 160?
Civil twilight, when there's still enough light to shoot someone 1/4-mile away,
will occur at around 2115 each evening. That means that we ought to be prepared
to stop any antenna work on Friday evening by then.
BTW, the New Moon will occur this weekend, so it will be DARK at night. Bring a
flashlight.
