The Springfield site offers many advantages:

- Easy access. It is close to main roads but not
on them.
- Large area with some trees,
- Easy access to food, supplies, doctors, etc.
- Area right at our 147.285 repeater site allows
easy outside communication with handie
with/without antenna/dummy load,
-gas stations across the street,
- easy access from all parts of the county. No
more than 30-35 minutes from anywhere, 15-20
minutes from Balto Beltway dependent on weekend
and/or time of day.
_Emergency treatment available from paramedics
located across the highway , hospital personnel
onsite, ample room for Medieval helicopter to land
if required.
-location provides secluded operation but easy to
locate.
-Good site for publicity. This site was figured
prominently in both last years And this years
disaster drill. The hospital administration is
aware of Ham Radio, our Operation there would
only serve to enhance their trust in us.
- Springfield is aware of what they need to do to
continue to be funded by the state. Serving the
community in other ways beside being an mental
health institution is necessary for them to help
show the need for their continued presence in the
community.
- Use of the campus for community activities will
help justify the retention of the facility and
grounds. It serves as a wildlife habitat and match
of the area is grass and has numerous tress and
other vegetation,
- Use of the grounds will help convince the state
that most of the closed buildings have historic
value and architectural value (wouldn't it be nice
to have one of those beautiful brick building as a
CCARC Clubhouse with multiple 100 foot towers',
-Using the public grounds there may get us
additional publicity ,
-Interference from us and to us should be
non-existent.
-It is a safe location. Springfield has their own
Police department that covers the campus on a
regular basis.

*** large operation , 19a - I would prefer a
smaller coordinated effort that keeps the stations
operation as much as possible. The argument that
with more stations, more new people can operate. I
DISAGREE. NEWBEES need to learn to operate and
what better way than logging for an experienced
operator. Newbie operators without experience are
sloppy and break rules vat best and without
listening and learning don't improve. In many
clubs today and most in the past, you had to earn
your way into the drivers seat at the opening
bell.

QRP is an admiral way to go. Again, your operators
need more experience and antennas need to be tried
and proven long before FD. QRP using dipoles of
verticals 10 foot about the ground will not
compete against the other stations. Making
contacts is fun; not making contacts is no fun.
Yagies up 30 or 40 feet at a minimum are
necessary.

The hi power vs. QRP could work if the number of
stations were kept to 3 plus the specials per
group and you get sufficient operators for each.

I personally started the field day dinner the
first time I chaired the event as a way of getting
families out to see what we do and reduce the
gripes of the XYLs that we were gone all weekend
probably having some sort of drunkin' party. I
think that FD operation should be at the
competitive level when your operating and fun and
relaxation the times you are not. The family
dinner also helps expose the young people to the
hobby in another light (outdoor as opposed to a
musty old place in the cellar). I VOTE FOR THE
DINNER!

Subject: [K3PZN-List] Field Day 2006

Field Day is coming! How do we want to do it this
year?

Where? The Springfield Hospital grounds have been
offered as a possible site.
Does anyone have a suggestion for another
location?

19A again?

There's a suggestion that we run an all QRP,
battery-powered site in order to get the 5X
multiplier. How many of you would like to try a
QRP field day?

There's another suggestion to run two nearby
sites. One would be QRP/battery, and the other
would be 150W/generator. One site would use
K3PZN, and the other would use another call sign.
Is anyone interested in that?

There's a suggestion to revive the 6pm Saturday
pot luck. The club could provide burgers, hot
dogs, and drinks. Do we want to do that?

We need station captains. So far, I have only one
volunteer (for an HF digital rig). Unless we're
want to be a 1A, we need some more folks to step
forward.
Slots are open for HF CW, HF phone, HF digital,
VHF, satellite, GOTA, and special mode demos.

Please send you comments or offer to be a station
captain to me at w3jjh at arrl.net. Include "Field
Day" in the subject line. I'll post information
concerning Field Day on my amateur radio web page
www.wjjhoge.net/w3jjh.html.
