The following information was sent to me by Mike Carr WA1QAA the MDC
Section Emergency Coordinator. It is a neat way to get information
when you don't have a telephone book handy. Give it a try.

Toll Free Numbers From Your Home Phone Number

 Establishing and maintaining your ARES/RACES roster and call up tree can
be a real challenge at times, especially if one of your goals is to
generate a call up tree in which you minimize or eliminate incurring toll
charges for your members calling the next on the list..

 In addition to being useful to ARES/RACES members, the information you
gather in the procedure outlined below is quite helpful for delivering
NTS messages in your jurisdiction.

 To obtain a list of area codes and three digit prefixes which are toll
free from your home phone number, follow the steps below. You may be
quite surprised at how many new prefixes have been added in the past few
years!

 Please urge your members to apply the following process for their own
home phone numbers as well.

1. Using your Web Browser, go to the following web page:
http://www22.verizon.com/CallingAreas/LocalCallFinder/LocalCAllFinderSAS.
htm?lob=R;

2. Enter the Area Code and three digit prefix of your home phone number;

3. Check 'Find out what calls are covered by your calling plan?'

4. Click 'Continue>>'

5. Check your calling plan

6. Click 'Go'

7. If you are in doubt about which prefixes your team members can dial
toll free, repeat steps 2 through 6, above, for each unique area code and
prefix on your roster.

8. If you are in a jurisdiction which borders on another Section, you
might check to be sure the information returned from your query includes
area codes and prefixes in the other Section which are toll free for you.

 When you and your members have completed the above process, you will be
a step up on the ladder toward NTS operations. Join us on our Section’s
NTS nets. They meet daily, 365 days a year, as indicated below:

   Net  Time  Frequency
   MEPN  1800L  3920kHz
   BTN  1830L  146.670
   MDD  1900L  3643kHz
   MSN  1930L  3717kHz
   MDD  2200L  3643kHz
