It costs more to replace any bad parts then to add more R-134a. If it
works, then just add ester oil (PAG reacts to mineral oil) and charge
until the system measures about 45 degrees at the outlet. (about 80% of an
R-12 charge)
I have juice and gauges for R-134a and the experience of a few retrofits. Any
time you open the system, it must be purged to a vacuum. R-134a is a smaller
molecule and will leak through the O-rings and seals a lot quicker then R-12.
All systems leak. Some more then others. It's a fact of life.
