Please NOTE: 7AM EST in the question should have been 7AM EDT,
NOT EST. Please recheck the problem below

What time in UTC would breakfast be if the current date is
January 1, 2004 and you were told that breakfast would be served at 7AM EDT.

            Hint: Daylight Savings Time

Ok use the rules below:

RULE #1

>From that last full Sunday in October until the following last Sunday in
April we use Eastern Daylight Savings Time or EDT

>From the last full Sunday in April until the last full Sunday in October we
use Eastern Standard Time or EST

RULE #2

1) If we are on Daylight Savings Time, then EDT time converted to UTC time
use the following formula: EDT + 5 Hours = UTC Hours

2) If we are on Daylight Savings Time, then UTC time converted to EDT time
use the following formula: UTC - 5 Hours = EDT Hours

3) If we are on Eastern Standard Time, then EST time converted to UTC time
use the following formula: EST + 4 Hours = UTC Hours

4) If we are on Eastern Standard Time, then UTC time converted to EST time
use the following formula: UTC - 4 Hours = EST Hours

Problem Solution

If it is January 1 any year that means that we are using EDT NOT EST.

RULE #2 means that we use formula #1 and #2 from RULE #2

1) If we are on Daylight Savings Time, then EDT time converted to UTC time
use the following formula: EDT + 5 Hours = UTC Hours

2) If we are on Daylight Savings Time, then UTC time converted to EDT time
use the following formula: UTC - 5 Hours = EDT Hours

So if breakfast is at 7AM EDT That means that we use formula RULE#2 - #1

1) If we are on Daylight Savings Time, then EDT time converted to UTC time
use the following formula: EDT + 5 Hours = UTC Hours

            7 + 5 Hours = 1200 UTC Hours
