Good Afternoon All,
The Carroll County Youth Organization is in full swing preparing
for field day. The GOTA station is being used as a training opportunity for
the Carroll County Youth Organization. If you have children or youth that
you would like to participate in field day please contact me immediately so
that I can get you both the information that will need to be reviewed prior
to field day. The point of reviewing this information is that it will make
it much more enjoyable for the young person participating in field day. As
you can see this has multiple purposes. First, the information that I have
asked them to learn will make their awareness in the Field Exercise much
higher then without that base of knowledge. Secondly, the information is
test information that will be required to be mastered for their license
examinations. Thirdly, it demonstrates their commitment to learning about
electronics, engineering, and ham radio.
I have asked the group to study the following information prior to field
day:
1) Be able to identify the frequency bands for the Extra Class
Privileges in the following bands:
160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10, 6, 2, 1.25 Meters
2) Be able to identify the following in Morse Code:
CQ, DE, FD, QSL, QRZ, Period(.), Question (?), N5LBJ
3) Able to recite the ITU Phonetic Alphabet
4) Able to convert UTC -> Local Time and Local Time -> UTC
5) Able to use the RS part of the RST system to quantify signals.
6) Learn the ARRL procedural prosigns
7) Learn the following Q signals
QRL, QRM, QRN, QRO, QRP, QRQ, QRS, QRT, QRS, QRU, QRV, QRY, QSK, QSL, QSO,
QST, QSY
8) Identify the states where the 81 ARRL Field Organizations are from.
9) Propagation for 160, 80, 40, 20 , 15, 10, 6, 2, 1.25 Meter bands
10) Description of the following modes: SSB, CW, AM, FM, FSK, AMTOR,
PACTOR, PSK31, PACKET, RTTY, Slow Scan TV, Fast Scan TV, WIFI
So, as you can see these kids are serious about operating and have made a
commitment to learn all of this material. So, please give them a pat on the
back when you see them at Field Day. They will primarily be operating at the
GOTA station but, I am sure that they will be touring the FD grounds to take
a break from time to time. Please welcome them in to your stations, show
them around, answer their questions, and feel free to ask them if they would
like to operate.
Remember that they are our future so we ALL need to invest sometime in
theirs.
