[K3PZN-List] Generator Update

Steve is right. I missed the part on the compression test. Unfortunately,
we have been running it with unleaded and that would or will certainly cause
valve damage. Considering that the other cylinders look ok, we could
probably get away with just replacing the valves for that cylinder. I would
think that very little lapping would be needed as hopefully the valve seats
are ok.

If the head gets pulled, we need to remember to be sure that all parts go
back into their original spaces even if they are interchangeable. Each part
wears at its own rate even if in thousands of a inch. All bolts and push
rods need to be clearly marked. That was the first lesson when I did a valve
job on my first car ... the hard way .... . Why bolts are affected ... I'm
not sure, but experience has shown that there is less problem keeping them
torqued down if they are in the same hole. Must have something to do with
slight differences that occurs with the treads of the softer metal after
being under stress for a long period.

I'm still feel we should be able to come up with an electric start somehow.
Possibly mounting a sprocket and chain drive could eliminate the precision
work of mounting a new flywheel or an add on flywheel. Interfacing to the
other end of a shaft that has a chain & sprocket has to be easier. Some sort
of centrifugal clutch would help. Wish I were a machinist. But I'm just a
tinkerer still trying to get my truck to run.

Steve,

I will retry the compression test with some oil and see what happens. The
crank case oil still looks nice and clean. If we have a problem with the
rings or cylinder walls, I would expect the blow by to blacken up the oil
quickly.

I was thinking that the generator needed more exercise. However, I could
probably benefit from some as well.

Greetings Rob;

Thanks for having a look at the generator! I'm a little concerned about
the low compression in one cylinder. Hopefully it's not an indication of a
big problem, like bad rings.

A shot of oil in that cylinder and a repeat compression test would tell if
the rings are the issue. If it's a dirty valve then the compression
shouldn't improve.

There should be a manual on that generator in the club's file cabinet. I
know for sure that one exists.

Are you referring to the generator, or to us, when you mention "regular
exercise" ??

With a good tune up and regular exercise hand cranking may not be as
difficult as is has been.
