[K3PZN-List] NO CODE REQUIREMENT FOR THE HF BANDS?

Al,

thanks for the posting i had read things the same way.
i suspect now the arrl will have to generate a
position paper on this subject. they are our national
radio society whether we agree with them or not on
every issue. because they are concerned about growth
of the hobby, i suspect with a little reluctance they
will come down on the side of no code licensing.

since you can't force anyone to actually operate CW,
and many folk have passed CW test and never or rarely
use it - it really comes down to their loss of an
opporunity. yes you can work dx easier on CW and
build nice simple rigs that work CW. but since what
really concerns us is having responsible operators you
properly use the spectrum we have, its not clear CW
proficiency is a must.

i would hope new comers would see CW as an opportunity
not a barrier, so maybe dropping CW proficiency in
licensing is not a bad thing. however, we should
continue to teach CW skills and perhaps test CW
proficiency as a confidence booster so folk have the
introduction to this great mode that has been a part
of our history and is still very useful.

by the way, if anyone who is becoming more CW
proficient wants a qso i will be glad to meet them on
the air at whatever speed they are comfortable with.
