frequency bands - i would teach them the traditional
bands first - and teach them the pattern: generals
don't have first 25 kHz of 80, 40, 20, 15 and also
don't have lower phone portion. for test, teacht them
to make educated guess and refer to charts in the
shack!

rig - given band conditions now i would suggest first
antenna to erect would be a simple 20 meter dipole.
on this band you can make domestic and dx contacts,
and with this type of antenna you won't need a tuner.
if possible install it so you could later add longer
wires in parallel.

microphone - that's the tricky part.  i would get
wiring diagram asap and get started with what parts
you need.  i think i read it may be different than
modern icoms but i am not sure.

you might as well start gathering materials and data.
