Hello Everyone
Good to see so many folks attending the Holliday Dinner.

Re: Erics questions regarding the truck and your answer, in a way starts
the ball a rolling. I can imagine the repairs needed. Vehicles like this can
be expensive to maintain let alone insurance etc.
It would be in the clubs interest if we don't buy our way out of this, but
volunteer ourselves according to our own specialty. Hopefully we will find
some folks with engine and transmission knowledge. Others with some
carpenter skills & metal skills may be required. A nice paint job after
appropriate body repairs would be nice.
While some people may be experts in a specific area, others just may be
tinkers. Maybe we can get some automotive "experts" in the club to stand up
and supervise a part of the renovation/repair. I'll bet there are a number
of club members who would like to know the techniques used by an expert to
repair the body and paint a van. I know I would. I'm a tinkerer in this
area, but under the guidance of an expert I could help with the project and
learn something. Maybe your interest is in transmissions. Or engine work.
Here again I have done some repairs (when I was a little younger), but could
work with an experience mechanic to overhaul an engine. A lot of us have
done brake jobs, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Finding a central workspace may be a problem. It would be nice if had a lift
and was heated (I'm dreaming). A lot of work including oil changes, lube
jobs, filter changes and exhaust work is much easier on a lift.
So maybe those in the club with expertise in one or more automotive areas
will volunteer to lead a specific effort. Outside maintenance could be very
costly.
A good major overhaul in the beginning with proper maintenance could add
years to the vehicles life. Very important is garaging. For as much as this
vehicle will be used, we want it to be ready at a moments notice. Having a
garage would reduce the yearly maintenance significantly and more
importantly, protect the gear inside from being stolen.

Greetings Eric;
You've asked a good question!
We as a club will first have to decide what level of investment we want to
make, in terms of both time and money, to get this van ready. Along with
that, we have to determine what our initial "required" expenses will be,
for must-have-done repairs, and what our recurring year-to-year expenses
will be, for registration, insurance, and inspections. Some of this
information is currently being gathered.
So -- to answer your question with another question -- How interested are
YOU in having this van ready for Field Day??
