Good Morning Mr. Creager,
The point is that Tom is not doing the proper job in the area of
RACES/ARES activities. This is something that to my heart is KEY!!! to
the survival of our hobby and key for passage of legislative relief of
restrictive antenna regulations. The point is that if you sign up to do
a job, whether compensated or not, you have an obligation to full fill
that job. In my opinion Tom has not done that for Maryland RACES/ARES
activity. I do not feel that Vic is being harsh, just truthful! How can
you say otherwise? Do you feel that we really have a working
relationship with MEMA and various county officials? If so I am very
open to hear your side, but from where I stand that is not the case. Vic
says that he will do the job, then fine. I am taking him at his work.
Tom has not been able to the job to my satisfaction. The reason why it
has not been addressed does not matter to me, the point is that there is
a job to do and he has not met his obligations in this area in my
opinion.
Let's give Vic a chance.
Regards,
Douglas Kearney N5LBJ

Subject: SECTION MANAGER ELECTION
April 9, 2003
Dear fellow hams:
I have been following with great interest the campaigning that has been
going on for MDC Section Manager. Both W3TOM - Tom and WA3YUV - Vic,
are very hard working, technically competent, highly experienced ham
radio operators. These guys are REAL HAMS, both deeply involved in many
aspects of the hobby. Either one would make an excellent choice for
Section Manager. I met them both when I joined SMARC in 1987 and
consider both of them as long-time friends. There has been some rivalry
between the two over the years. In fact, SMARC split into two factions
some years ago eventually culminating in the formation of the Charles
County Club. Tom went with CCARC and Vic stayed with SMARC. This may
have contributed to some of the problems in our area of the section.
The reason I am writing is to express my concern over the apparent
personal attacks on Tom that appear in Vic's website statement, "For the
Truth About the State of the Section" (website
http://www.qsl.net/smarc/wa3yuv/). I think that Vic has valid points
and brings up some section issues that need attention but the tone of
the statement is too strong. Politics are unavoidable in any
organization but in Amateur Radio a high premium is placed on goodwill
and respect, particularly when discussing a person's performance in a
volunteer position.
Possibly, Tom (website http://www.bfdin.net/w3tom) is spread too thin
with all of his volunteer activities to devote enough attention to
managing the section. Possibly, Vic would find time availability to be
an issue as well, considering all of his other volunteer activities.
Both of these guys take on more volunteer work than most of us would
even consider, and Section Manager is a huge commitment. I hope that
Tom will take this opportunity to respond to Vic's comments.
Note that I have addressed this email to members of clubs supporting
both candidates. Please feel free to pass my comments on to your
respective club members. I noticed that various clubs and individuals
have banded together for one candidate or the other. Hopefully this
will stir up some additional discussion. There are always more facets
to an election than initially meet the eye.
Sincerely,
Undecided Voter
