Keith;

The real "Old Timers" never had problems with phonetics -- they used CW!!

Point well taken, but aren't you "old timers" supposed to be setting a good
example for us "newbies"? Granted, there aren't many of us, but still.....

BTW, the term "old timers" was meant to be interpreted in the best possible
way.

Hi Phil & Company;

I'll join the rag chew on this one.

First - Phil is correct... - certainly with emergency
and critical communication. In fact, I generally
criticize operators at my station when they don't use
proper phonetics - because those "cutsey" phonetics
can translate in busted (i.e. wrong) call signs in the
other station's log.

Next - there are exceptions - as follows:

1) When things get slow and you're trying to drum up
business (in a competition) CQing, and 2)
Occasionally, when you're trying, and having
difficulty breaking a pileup.

Sometimes you will get through with one phonetic where
a DX station is mis-interpreting another.

For example, you are N3II (Dave, you coming to field
day?) trying to work an Italian station with your 5
watts and wet string on 10 meters.

If you holler November 3 Italy Italy - you may have a
better chance than using India India.

73,

Jim  WX3B
