Like Jim my first radio was a CB, in my case a CB
100mW walkie-talkie no license required. The then
saved more money and bought a second one. (Both from
Lafayette) and then when I became a teenager I saved
for a real CB, it was also from Lafayette but the
bottom of the line, tubes, crystals for eight
frequencies. Boy did I have fun with that stuff.
While most hams may not own up to it I will. I still
use CB from time to time because it is the only thing
that will work. (If you are the only ham in a group
that needs communications amateur radio simply does
not work!)
Last, one can pick up rather good CB equipment at ham
fests for $5 or less. I have a few mobile CBs that
work AOK and I refuse to pay anything more than $5 for
a "working" unit. walkie-talkies are still more
expensive, but that too may change with the glut on
the market of the FRS radios.
