Hi Keith & Field Day Fans;

I think that you have many neat things to look forward
to ... and DO...at field day this year!

First - you can participate in just about all aspects
of field day, including working SSB on the 'hot' HF
bands.  There's normally two SSB stations on the air;
one for 10/15/20 and one for 40/80/160 (well not
really 160). Last year there were two CW stations and
one digital station. We also had a VHF operating
position covering 2 & 6 meters.

Phil, KE3FL sometimes makes QRP contacts during field
day.

We will need your help putting up antennas, taking
down antennas, operating, getting food together, etc.
"You", of course, is not just "Keith" - it's the whole
club.

I understand that Joe Lambert, KB3DSR (and W3ARS???)
are field day chiefs this year - and I'm sure someone
will correct me if there are others.

Not only is it FREE - but you get a great BBQ meal on
Saturday. Field day is always the last weekend of
June.

It is an emergency preparedness training event,
primarily, and some of us (myself included) would
consider it a contest. It is a DX contest in the
sense that you can work Alaska, Hawaii, Virgin
Islands, Canada, etc. I think you can work DX as well
- but I'm not really sure. I remember working a few
VK's and ZL's in past field days. DX is NOT the
focus.

It IS an overnight, 24 hour continous event. In fact,
some people pitch a tent and stay on-site the whole
time. It's normal for us to have operation 24 hours
for several stations.

You would bring gear appropriate for a hike and
camping trip, including sunscreen, clothing, bug
repellent, your favorite snack(s) (though we do serve
good meals and sodas, etc.). Normally, the
temperature is quite HOT. If you plan to spend the
night, you're responsible for your own shelter as
well.

If you're planning to operate, you might ask the team
captains for a specific time, and find out if there's
any expectation of you to bring your own equipment.
Team captains are generally formed in May or June.
If you have some good gear you're willing to "loan"
the club - let people know! Generally, our June club
meeting is dedicated to planning field day.

We have many club members that are passionately
involved in field day - and we have guests that visit
us on a regular basis. In fact, we normally create an
"information booth" for visitors. Out of "club"
guests are allowed to operate and we encourage them
to contact the team captains in advance to arrange for
optimal operating time!

So - if you're getting the idea that I like field
day....you're RIGHT!

73,

Jim Nitzberg WX3B
