Greetings to all CCARC - Carroll County Youth Organization members,
 
    Those of you who did not attended the July meeting missed some great
demonstrations on Waveforms, Wavelengths, The speed of light, and
Propagation. Sorry that you could not be here or that you were late, I felt
it important that you guys received the material and do the activities on
your own.
 
    PLEASE SEE ME AT MONDAYS NIGHT MEETING (July 12th) for your CDROM of
material.

1) Please read the document titled ARRLLetterforJuly.doc
 
    This has some very important happenings for the month of July.
 
    Questions for those who were late or missed the meeting please come
prepared in August to answer the following questions:
 
        1) What is the name of the new Amateur Radio Satellite that was just
launched?
 
 
        2) What is the Russians astronauts call sign?
 
 
        3) Why was an ex ham fined $10,000.?
 
2) Field Day pictures. 
 
        There is folder titled FieldDayPictures2004. You will find a BUNCH
of great pictures of the activities at field day. I would like to thank all
of you for your     
        participation. I hope that you guys really enjoyed yourselves and I
look forward to turning over the ENTIRE project to you guys next year!
 
3) The next activity was the MORSE CODE drill?
 
       Everyone that was there on Saturday has committed!!!! to learning
       the following 6 Morse code letters for the August meeting.
 
       E, T, A, N, I, M
 
            So this means your also!!!
 
    Everyone is EXPECTED to come to the August class with these six letters
memorize at a speed of at least 13 words per minute.
 
    Remember, if you spend between 5 and 10 minutes EVERY DAY before you go
to bed with flash cards and practicing these letters with your parents,
    I can certainly assure you that you will master them within a month.
 
    Everyone that DID NOT ATTEND or was late needs to complete the
MorseCodeTest.doc and turn this in by the next meeting.
 
4) Learning Unit 1
 
    Within the directory titled LH1+2 you will find an adobe RLH Unit 1.pdf
 
    Learning Unit 1 talks about Wireless communication. Please read the
ENTIRE document
 
    The look at Lesson #1-1
 
        I would like you to complete lesson one and then bring your
completed listening log to the next meeting.
 
        Please spend 15 to 30 minutes in the morning before Noon listing to
various AM stations. Please record the following:
        Date, Time, Call Sign, Frequency, Location, Type of music played.
 
        Then please spend 15 to 30 minutes in the late evening after 9PM
listing to various AM stations. Please record the following:
        Date, Time, Call Sign, Frequency, Location, Type of music played.
 
        Come to the August class prepared to discuss the differences between
the daytime and nighttime listening logs.
 
    Then look at Lesson #1.2
 
        I would like you to read and complete the activity as listed
 
5) Learning Unit 2
 
        Within the directory titled LH1+2 you will find an adobe RLH Unit

ENTIRE document.
 
        Please review the Lessons 2.1 thru 2.5
 
        Come to the August class prepared to discuss the following types of
propagation:
 
            Line of Site Propagation
            Ground Wave Propagation
            Sky wave Propagation
            Troposphere Ducting
            Skip Zone
            Ionosphere D, E, F1, F2 Layers when they occur, what effect they
have on radio propagation
 
6) APRS Automatic Position Reporting System.
 
    Please read the following documents
 
        1) APRS Introduction text document.
        2) StanAPRS.pdf
        3) UI-View
 
         The final activity for the month of July is for YOU to setup a APRS
station at your home. You may not be able to transmit, but you will be able
to receive all kinds of 
        data. The class is going to use the UI-VIEW 32 software. The
software is included on the CDROM under the APRS -> UI-VIEW32 directory.
There is a $15.00 fee for the 
        registration of the software. The normal fee for the youth class is
$10.00 per month so please consider the purchase of this software the July
and August fee. You will also 
        probably wish to look into purchasing the Mapping software from
Undertow Software. UI-View is set to work with this software so that you can
zoom in and out of the maps to 
        get various perspectives on the data displayed.
 
        NOTE: If you would like, I will have an impromptu demonstration on
how to setup the UI-VIEW software one night this week if you will coordinate
with me.
 
        All participants are expected to have their stations up and running
by next months meeting. We will be having activities utilizing this mode of
Ham Radio through out the next year.
 
 
NEXT MEETING IS August 14th at the FTC from 1PM until 4PM
