Yes but if we wanted another band we would be adding additional
complexity and would likely want a more comprehensive solution.  That
said, most of the APRS traffic falls on one frequency within the U.S. so
a single digipeater would likely be all we need.

Well, now I think we're talking apples and oranges.  Yes, they are both
fruit, but the implementation is a little different.  If you want to
build a digital network for connected-style communications I'd recommend
a different approach.
