[K3CAL] Experimenting with 9600-baud APRS

Tom, you are correct, with exception. Fldigi is mostly useful on HF, for distance, but it may be used on vhf and uhf; vhf being better in this type terrain in Calvert. I believe it would work better in a city scape on uhf. This mode is short range comm, we were doing some short demos of this awhile back, at mount hope with two portable radios and laptops to demo function. Due to limited time window at Mt Hope, we didn't get to do a lot, or get everyone a chance to "hands on". By the way the portable radios were all band hf/vhf/uhf radios, signal link sound cards and laptops, with support accessories. I will look up an old email I sent out that links to utube video that gives a good step by step guide setting up the program(s) and using on a radio.
We never were able to get to the APRS messaging and still didnt get enough participation to continue with FLDIGI. We were also going to do more with winlink rms express.
When only one or two people are doing this, its not much fun. For some reason there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in doing group workshops on this??? It is easy to set up at a home station and just leave it, being ready in all three modes with the same equipment and different software programs. A TNC is needed for APRS, or a dongle and program, don't even need a gps if you are running at home, just manual entry your coordinates.
This is certainly a topic for discussion, I don't feel this has to be CARA sponsored to experiment with. I would like it to be a need before CARA puts up a digipeater, which means there are hams in Calvert using this on a daily basis. Heard anyone on the repeaters lately, we certainly don't have to worry about continuous duty amplifiers these days!

I would want to use my own call sign, but would leave the digipeater open for any ham to use. Also, I would hope that a more permanent plan would be developed shortly after this project was stated.
