Great idea.  The club owns a FT-1D and a FTM-400.  Perhaps we could use those 
with your quest?  I know I haven't played with the FTM-400 enough to truly 
understand how the APRS works on that radio.  I've not been happy with the 
APRS implementation on the FT-1D, when compared to the Kenwoods, but perhaps 
much of that is due to lack of regular use.
