[K3CAL] Boy Scouts

Hello, Everyone,

I have not joined in club activities, but I’ve been a ham and a Boy Scout all my life, so I thought I’d chime in. I taught at Boy Scout summer camp as a counselor when I was 15. I’ve been a scoutmaster of three troops and in 2010 was in charge of the Drafting Merit Badge course at the National Jamboree. This email chain piqued my interest.

This course COULD take several meetings, but I would not recommend that. There are too many distractions for Scouts if you try that and you’ll lose many of their interests.

I believe you could teach all of the merit badge requirements in six hours. They don’t need to be experts, you want to grab their interest – even if you don’t think it would be enough time to give them what you feel would be a good enough grounding (pun intended) in Ham Radio.

I suggest breaking it into 3 segments and do a round robin training. Segment one could cover requirements 1 – 4. Segment two could cover 5 and 6. Segment three could cover 7 and 8 and 9a. In each segment I’d switch every 10 minutes generally so you never had more than about 10 minutes of lecture and have lots of hands on.

Use easy to understand pictures and lots of actual equipment, electronics stuff, etc, to make it really interesting. At the end of lesson three let them each do 5 QSLs and set the receiving stations up beforehand so each would receive QSL cards right away, too. I think if you did anything close to that it would be a real home run for both the club and the scouts.

Great club. Thanks for keeping it going.

Status update:

I checked with MHCC this afternoon about room availability. Saturdays are bad due to large scheduled parties (birthdays, etc). Friday evenings are typically the most available times, as are most Sundays between 12:30 and 5:30 PM.

I passed this info on to Joe Mandile and we decided to hold off any scheduling until we meet with them next Tuesday evening at their Scout meeting up in Dunkirk. (8PM at the Smithville United Methodist Church near the Safeway on Ferry Landing Rd).

Another possibility is to meet with the Scouts at another location other than MHCC and simply bring some radios. Will discuss next Tuesday.

I tend to agree with Ron. The syllabus of information they need to master for the merit badge is pretty extensive. Would be difficult to do it justice in just one day.

As promised at last nights meeting, these are what is required to help the Boy Scouts get their Radio merit badges.
