Subject: Maryland-DC Section Digital EmComm Meeting and CALV-ARES Meeting
TO: CALV-ARES Stations and others Hams
I received email from MDC-SEC that there will be a packet meeting this
Saturday, April 12. Please read the email below Hopefully, everyone can
attend the MDC Section Digital EmComm Meeting.
You do not need to be an ARES member to attend. CARA Inc. has many new
hams. If anyone wishing to or is thinking about becoming a CALV-ARES
member, please contact me.
The are only two requirements to join CALV-ARES;
1. Must be a Ham
2. A desire to provide Public Service and/or Emergency Communication
There is no dues. You just need to contact me, answer a few easy questions
and that is all.
CALV-ARES meets the THIRD TUESDAY monthly at 7:30 P.M. (L). Our next
meeting* is at the Drum Point Emergency Services Center.
We are expecting an exciting educational meeting. Discussion and
demonstration topics will be but not limited to getting Drum Point Emergency
Services Center setup for RMS and WinLink 2000. Advantages using the Buddy
Pole VersaTee <http://www.buddipole.com/antenna-accessories.html> over the
PVC NVIS antenna CALV-ARES built a few years ago. There will be lots of
hands-on training and discussions.
We hope you can attend the meeting at PRGE EOC this Saturday and hope to see
new faces at the
CALV-ARES Meeting on Tuesday, April 15, at 7:30 P.M. (L).

Our Section Manager, Jim Cross, WI3N, and I have come up with a list of
Section hams that we feel will help guide our Section's direction on Digital
Emcomm as we look at WL2K and packet. You may wonder why you are invited to
attend. You were selected because of one or more of the following: your
knowledge in the area of Winlink 2000, active in sponsoring a Winlink RMS
Packet Node, packet networking, have a need for an RMS Node in your county,
have an interest in setting a up Section Packet Network, have access to a
tower(s), you're just a real nice guy, etc.
I have an email in to Steve Waterman, K4CJX, from the Winlink Development
Team asking him to identify for us any Section RMS Packet Node sys ops who
are not on the WK2K RMS Map for whatever reason. If any are identified,
this email will be updated to reflect that.
The meeting will be held on Saturday, April 12, from 10 am to 3 pm, at the
Prince George's Fire Service Building, 6820 Webster Street, Hyattsville, MD.
If you show up early, we can have a grand rag chewing session before the
meeting starts!! Ring the door bell at the front entrance for access.
Additional parking at the rear of the building as parking out front is
limited. Talk-in on 145.23MHz (-) pl 110.9.
Topics to included, but not limited to:
* Node frequencies: make sense? need changing?
* Do we need frequency coordination among ourselves?
* Moving traffic across county lines: Frequencies
* Packet and Winlink: Can they coexist on the current frequencies?
* 2m vs 70cm? 1200 vs 9600? Pros and cons
* Node location attributes i.e., private, clubs, government pros and
con
* Ideas for attracting Node sites: dxers, water towers, etc.
* What shall a plan look like to accommodate both WL2K and Packet?
* Maryland-DC Section Packet Network: The need for
If you have an item that you think needs discussion or resolution, please
call it to my attention and I will consider it for the list.
While a face to face meeting is best, we realize that not everyone will be
able to make it due to medical or other personal issues and such. Jim Cross
is working on getting a virtual GoToMeeting scheduled during that time for
those who would like to participate but will be unable to make the trip.
We hope that you will be able to attend. Please me know by COB Friday, April
4 if you can, so that we can plan for coffee in the morning and lunch at
noon.
Oh, and if you have a ham-call ID badge, wear it so we know who you are.
Most of you know who you are, hopefully, we know who we are, but most of us
don't know who you are, so, we all need to know who you are!!
Thanks and we look forward to seeing you there.
73, de
Jim
