[K3CAL] Fw: [hamtechgroup] SMLS Update

I have a some possible stupid questions

#1) It is my understanding that repeater equipment belonging to Dwayne
FAILED, not any actions taken by CARA ?
His repeater failed. He asked the repeater committee to disconnect it and bring it to him. When got to the RACES Room own by the County, he had three devices connected to one coax. However, he had emailed PQS months ago not to touch his equipment so there are contradiction statements being made.

CARA own a repeater so we simply turn-off everything in the room, disconnected the coax and electric and installed our repeater.
#2) What is SMLS ..... I'm guessing Southern Maryland Link System ?
which I am thinking may be a system that links several repeaters
in Southern Maryland together ? If so for what purpose ??

Dwayne(LDG-Electronic) wants a establish communications for the tri counties plus PG & AA. He came to a CARA meeting a few years ago and said RACES & ARES are dead = ? He has lots of money, time and a repeater business. He has had two clubs go belly up, Southern Patuxent ARC[SPARC} & Southern Maryland and Rural Territories(?)[SMART] He had a history of destroying clubs; he has always wanted to own CARA for some reason. He (not LDG-Electronics) like any ham can start their own club.

#3) What is keeping CARA from participating in this SMLS system? Is
additional equipment needed ?? Does CARA even want to participate ?

CARA supports RACES and ARES. That means we support the Maryland Emergency Resource Plan <http://www.arrl-mdc.net/MDCERPsum71.htm> . Dwayne (LDG-Electronics) did for a while then he thought SoMd needed to support the Red Cross. The Red Cross is a served agency for RACES but he wanted to support Cheltenham radio club (SMARC), a non-RACES ham club. CARA members did not since we have supported RACES since 1954. Also, Dwayne has a new friend that every time CARA failed to play with (FD, QSO Party and etc.) the power on our repeater was lowered or amplifiers were removed. CARA did not want to be under the LDG-Electronics umbrella. I still think it is wrong for a business to operate a ham club. This is a hobby and should be operated as such!

#4) If this SMLS is a multi site link system designed for emergency
communication is it really such a good system to rely on during
      emergency’s??
A multi-site communication system that goes down when only
one site fails? Seems pretty unreliable during a storm such as the
tree ravishing, power robbing storms of the last several weeks.

I'm just a PTT pusher but a system that depends that much on
any one site seems pretty dumb.

There is nothing wrong with hams making their own club and making it have a purpose. CARA on the other hand is located solely on County property because we support RACES. The County is required by law to have backup communications which is RACES. When RACES is not activated the members of CARA get to use their tower for an antenna and their room at Mt. Hope Community Center for the repeater. That is the benefit for CARA members but we encourage all members to support by joining RACES. And participating when called by the County. It is a win-win situation.

That property is not for other businesses to test their products, not for other companies to install antennas and etc. If the County allows such practice to one company for free then they would have a line of companies wanting space for their radio equipment. The cell companies many want free tower and property space too.

Got to head to work and hope this helps.

Just a follow up to the SMLS being disabled by CARA. While it was unfortunate, there was never any danger to life (people) or structures for the recent weather events that occurred because of the loss of that system. There were enough repeaters still on line that mostly all communications were able to be conducted in St. Mary's.

Calvert has been heard that they used simplex since their plan has been re-written to no longer include any SPARC repeaters and Charles County worked simplex. We have not heard from PG or AA counties to see how they fared through the weather(although it was not as bad there)..

Yes, it's a great inconvenience that we do not currently have inter-county communications, but we will solve that in a way that does not involve the Calvert Amateur Radio Association. This will be a very simple thing to do and we will publish details of how we will accomplish this in the next month or so.

Please be patient while we work on the replacement system and then we ask everyone to become active in supporting it. The Calvert Club has demonstrated how easy it is for one group to take out an entire system for many groups and we simply have to make sure that can never happen again.
