I have a some possible stupid questions

#1) It is my understanding that repeater equipment belonging to Dwayne
FAILED, not any actions taken by CARA ?

#2) What is SMLS ..... I'm guessing Southern Maryland Link System ?
which I am thinking may be a system that links several repeaters
in Southern Maryland together ? If so for what purpose ??

#3) What is keeping CARA from participating in this SMLS system? Is
additional equipment needed ?? Does CARA even want to participate ?

#4) If this SMLS is a multi site link system designed for emergency
communication is it really such a good system to rely on during
      emergency's ??
A multi-site communication system that goes down when only
one site fails? Seems pretty unreliable during a storm such as the
tree ravishing, power robbing storms of the last several weeks.

I'm just a PTT pusher but a system that depends that much on
any one site seems pretty dumb.

Just a follow up to the SMLS being disabled by CARA. While it was unfortunate, there was never any danger to life (people) or structures for the recent weather events that occurred because of the loss of that system. There were enough repeaters still on line that mostly all communications were able to be conducted in St. Mary's.

Calvert has been heard that they used simplex since their plan has been re-written to no longer include any SPARC repeaters and Charles County worked simplex. We have not heard from PG or AA counties to see how they fared through the weather(although it was not as bad there)..

Yes, it's a great inconvenience that we do not currently have inter-county communications, but we will solve that in a way that does not involve the Calvert Amateur Radio Association. This will be a very simple thing to do and we will publish details of how we will accomplish this in the next month or so.

Please be patient
while we work on the replacement system and then we ask everyone to become active in supporting it. The Calvert Club has demonstrated how easy it is for one group to take out an entire system for many groups and we simply have to make sure that can never happen again.
