Hi Chris:
First I will preface what I have to say about NRD545 and the R75, that I
use mine for Amateur Radio only. I have been licensed since 1951.
I have owned the NRD545 for a little over 3 years.
I have also owned and used the IC-R75 for several years. Never had a
R71.
The 545 is very sensitive and compares to the 75 when the 75 is on
pre-amp 2.
The 545 DSP is not as good for Ham work as the 75's plug-in filters. On
the 75 I operate mostly SSB and have the 9MHz 1.9KHz filter along with the
455KHz 1.8KHz filter. I do like the twin passband tune better the single 545
passband tune. I'm able to get rid of QRM 2KHz below me with it where I
cannot with the 545 unless I narrow the DSP filters quite far. This is with
the 545 filters set at sharp or soft.
I do not like the Noise Reduction on the 545, I have tried every setting
in the menu I can come up with and only on a S5 or higher signal does it
seem to work good.
The UT-106 DSP option on the 75 seems to work much better.
Outside of these comments they both work great. I use a IC-718 for
transmitting and have the 545 & 75 on long wire antennas phased at 90
degrees different angle. I use three different antennas for 20 Meters, a
vertical, a dipole and a long wire. The long wire is also used from 80
Meters to 10 Meters. On transmit, relays do the switching on antennas. Both
20 Meter vertical & dipole have 1:1 SWR with no tuner in the line. I only
use the tuner for the transmit long wire, fed right at the tuner output, no
coax.
I haven't worked CW for many years, but if I was to I would put the
narrow CW filters in the R75 on both the 9MHz IF & the 455KHz IF.
If you want one or the other for Amateur Radio use, I would save some
bucks and go for the R75, however if I were to use one or the other for
shortwave listening I would go for the NRD545.
My past receiver experience has been, SX-28A, several Nationals, several
Hammarlunds, several Collins, Yaesu, Kenwood and a Drake R8B. The NRD545 is
better than any of these, strictly from a overall receiver standpoint.
73's
