The IC-746PRO has an excellent receiver; in fact, it is the most advanced
circuitry Icom has produced so far. The DSP filters can be reduced to 50
Hz, and modified along the way by the "Twin Passband Tuning" feature.
My JST-245 has a bit better audio on receive than does the IC-746PRO, and
with its Heil HC-5 mike the JST-245's 150+ watts packs a real punch on
transmit. The IC-746PRO is no slouch on transmit, either. In dealing with
interference (the JST has all the optional filtering), the IC-746PRO is better.
I'm going to be using the IC-746PRO exclusively on SSB for a while because
the JST-245 has locked up on me and no controls work while the panel's
indicators are in full swing. Resets do not accomplish anything. So it's
going back to Universal Radio for repairs.
