Hello Phil.
I can't help too much on the PLL problem; never had such an occurance
here (Thank Gawd!). I'm in the same boat as you re. an extender card;
I've been looking for one too, just in case. JRC made one, but it's a
pretty
rare bird.
As far as the interface is concerned, building one would be a pretty toug=
h
job, even tho there don't appear to be proprietary parts involved. I was
considering that route here too, but I got real lucky; on Yahoo I put out=
a
call for said card, and a gentleman in New Zealand answered.
BTW... if you DO find one by that sort of route, don't expect any
bargains;
the market on them is VERY high. Mine came in for about $250 .
Re. mods & filters... check out the web pages of Sherwood Engineering
(mods, mostly audio, some filters), and Fox Tango (crystal filters). I go=
t
hold
of a couple of filters from a Canadian supplier (a couple of years ago),
Atlantic Radio... see thier web page. Another possible source is the use=
d
gear section of Burghardt Radio's web page; when they take radio trade
ins, they appear to strip out the upgrade items & offer them for sale
seperately.
That's helped me out a couple of times; these days, just TRY to find the
UX-14
computer interface and the EX-310 speech synth module for an Icon R71A !!=
!
<<GRIN>> =
Another place I got lucky... I was at the going out of business auction
for
Radio Recyclers in Milwaukee, and what should show up, with no other
bidders, but several filter boards for the NRD515! I took a chance (not
much
of one really; the boards went for $2.50 each!). Unsoldering the filter=
s
from
them & adding them to the NRD525, I found I'd made an EXCELLENT deal on
that one! Since the NRD515 seems to be a VERY scarce receiver these days=
you might well luck into some of these at a decent price.
Good Luck,
Tom, W9LBB

PS- Glad to see that there's someone ELSE out there who's crazy enough to=
stay up all night chasing NDBs! Beginning to think I was the ONLY one!
<<grin>>
Current King of the NDB Receivers here is a Racal RA1772 with homebrewed =
5' loop.
