[Johnson] We have a FB working Valiant

Be careful of fuse block placement!

I was rebuilding my old HO-10 monitor scope, added a three wire cord and had
to find a place for a fuse.
The rear panel space is very tight, so I mounted the fuse holder inside the
case near the power cord entrance.
Everything worked well until I put it back in the shack and it started
blowing fuses......
Back on the bench, all kinds of measurements were taken, nothing found, so I
replaced the fuse and put it back in service......

FUSE BLOWS!!!!!

Back on the bench, etc.......

Finally, a buddy says "We always turn the equipment upside down for service,
leave it right side up and check it that way"

It took about a minute to spot the problem. I mounted the fuse just over
one of the compaction tubes and the tube heat was cooking the fuse.

I installed an in-line fuse holder, the problem was solved and a lesson
learned.

Yup. When I rebuilt mine, I put the block fuse on the underside of the
chassis. Truly a great idea, really stupid practice. I finally put a real
twist fuse holder next to the RF output (to the right), put a real three
prong power socket in to the right of the exciter input--for use with a
heavy computer cord. Yes, that involved a little boring, cutting, and
movement of a component or three. While I was at it, I removed the old
crystal socket for dow key voltage, cut the hole to a rectangle, and
installed a decent two pin female socket. While I was in the neighborhood,
the two pin mic socket took a trip down memory lane too--and was replaced
with a thee pin model. Now it is shielded.

Lots of things have improved since this stuff was made. Very few of them
are museum pieces--and even fewer need to be treated like they are. Use the
best tech possible to make the unit convenient, safe, and useable.

Hi Bob.....
While you are rebuilding the rebuild.....install a zipper on the cabinet
because if you are really gonna install the fuse holder under the
chassis....you'll need that zipper....often.

All right,
Im happy to say, my newly acquired Valiant seems to be working well. The
3 wire cord is now in place. I decided to have the fuse holder under the
chassis so as not to disturb the integrity of the original radio by drilling
any holes and retaining the SSB adapter fitting. It loads up on all bands
with great power output per the manual. Unfortunately, I am having trouble
with the VFO being stuck again after reassembling the case. So, Ive decided
to rebuild the previous owners rebuild so I can get it right and not have to
worry about it any longer. He just used to big of bolts with fat heads to
screw the two halves together and they just dont seem to have enough
clearance when everything is tightened down. I want to take it apart again
to repaint the thing so that will be the time I do the coupler.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and as soon as I have the time, I will get
this thing up on my website so I can show the before and after shots when I
am really done with it. Nice thing about this radio is that there are no
modifications that I can find at all, other than the replacement of the
rectifier tubes which now have 3B28's. So, I am anxious to see what my audio
reports on AM turn out to be with a D-104. Thats the only mike I have but
should be fine.

Thanks again and we will let you know when the radio has been refinished.
